2008 Projects and Initiatives of the Linden Fund

Rental of Linden Fund Office & Salary of Office Manager – Office is located at the old Sprostons building, now called the Linden Business Centre, and is owned by the Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP) - a Linden Fund partner in multiple projects. The Fund occupies Suite 1, at 97-98 Republic Avenue, Mackenzie. (Opened in May 2005)

Multi-phase Furniture & Manufacturing Project - LFU is investigating the feasibility of acquiring land and building a factory to manufacture commercial furniture and wood products of all types for local and national markets, and export. (Planning stage)

3nd Annual Teachers Workshop - Teachers’ Workshop conducted during Linden Town Week by Dr. Ivy Bakker-Mitchell. Teachers, parents and administrators meet outside of the classroom to discuss matters relating to the education of Linden students. (Ongoing program begun in 2006)

Primary School Backpack Program - Launched in collaboration with Dr. Ivy Bakker Mitchell. Over 300 backpacks, filled with school supplies, including 2,000 pencils donated by Ms. Lorraine Cross of Canada, and shipped to Linden primary schools’ needy children. This year the Fund plans to donate 1000 backpacks to the 1&2 grade students of the nine area Primary Schools. (Launched September 2004)

Community activities – Motivational visits to schools by LF members and professionals when in Linden, especially for Town week.

Visiting Nurse Service – To allow for the provision of medical and social visitation and other services for senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWD), and others regarded as ‘shut-ins’. To be arranged and conducted in partnership with relevant government agencies and non-government organizations, as well as through collaboration with the beneficiaries’ kin. (Planned initiation in August)

LF-sponsored Medical Mission – The Fund sponsored a team of 30 medical professionals including physicians, certified nurses and a social worker to provide free medical attention for the people of Linden and Region 10 who have limited access to such services. Plans to continue and expand this initiative are being given primacy. (April-May 2007. Intention is to make this a semi-annual project)

Donation of EKG Machine worth $1 million – Through the Linden Fund, the Linden Hospital Complex gets donation of an ultra-modern Atria 3100 EKG machine from Henry Schein, Inc. - the largest distributor of healthcare products and services to office-based practitioners in the combined North American and European markets.  (May 2007)

R. A. Adams Memorial Scholarship – Annual scholarship sponsored by LFU’s Vice-Chairman Dr. Keith Seaforth, and established to support one female and one male student in Grade Six at both Regma Primary and St. Aidan’s Primary schools, who and preparing for the Secondary Schools Entrance Examinations (SSEE).  (Ongoing program, begun in 2006)

The Adopt-A-Child Program in collaboration with the Linden Care Foundation – This initiative supports approximately 300 children over a 5-year period in a nutritional and life skills enhancement program.   (Ongoing)

$2.2 million in annual UG Scholarships offered by the Linden Fund – Under the sponsorship of the Fund, a total of seven youths from Linden are currently enrolled at the University of Guyana, in 4-year programs for baccalaureate degrees and diplomas. (Program began in September 2002)

Annual SUMMER TUTORING PROGRAM – In collaboration with the Linden Care Foundation, the Fund’s UG and ‘A’ Level/CAPE scholars tutor primary school students who require additional academic support based on assessments by their respective head teachers. (Ongoing program in Jul-Aug, begun in 2004)

$40,000 Anthony S. Tim Scholarship Fund – Annual scholarship fund sponsored by Linden Fund Canada’s Bert Bacchus of Richmond Hill, Ontario for two students at the Christianburg-Wismar Multilateral School. (Ongoing program, begun in 2004)
