2004 Projects and Initiatives of the Linden Fund

(All contributions are in Guyana $)

$2.16M UG Scholarships sponsored by the Linden Fund in 2004 – a total of 7 youths
from Linden are currently enrolled at UG under the sponsorship of the Fund - 1 third-year, 2 second-year and 4 first-year students studying Law, Pre-Medicine and Education, among others. (Started in 2002)

Over $½M Annual Primary School Backpack Program - launched in collaboration with Dr. Ivy Bakker Mitchell, Lindenite and long time educator, now with Florida A&M University. Over 300 backpacks, filled with additional supplies, including 2,000 pencils donated by Ms. Lorraine Cross of Markham and shipped by Linden Fund Canada, to area primary schools’ needy children. (September 2004)

Computer & Books Donation Program - 3 computers donated by Guyanese businessman Carlton Henry of Vankel Computers of Ontario and shipped by LFC, along with children’s software, to the Linden School for the Handicapped. In addition, approximately 15 cases of books were shipped by LFC for Linden Schools, including Mackenzie High, New Silver City, among others. (September 2004)

Children with a few parents who participated in the program.Inaugural Summer Tutoring Program funded at close to $½ M - The Linden Fund began the annual summer tutoring program in Linden for needy children, who were identified by their principals. The program is a 6-week, intensive immersion in CXC preparation classes, taught by the current LF UG scholars and A’Level/CAPE LF Scholar. A total of 35 children, with a few parents, participated in the program , held at the old St. Aidans School, Burnham Drive, Wismar. (July- August 2004)

Over $¼ M two-year Scholarship for GCE A’Level/CAPE studies – the continuation of an award to Deon Anderson, a former MHS student who topped Region 10, with 10 subjects, with 7 Grade Ones, at the 2003 CXC Examination. He is pursuing GCE A’Levels at Queens’ College. (Started in September 2003)

The “Anthony S. Tim Scholarship Fund”- sponsored by Linden Fund Canada’s Bert Bacchus of Richmond Hill, Ontario. This is a $20,000 a year scholarship program for 1 male and 1 female student each, starting in 1st Form at the Wismar Christianburg Secondary School (Multilateral School) in Blueberry Hill. (Started in September 2003)

$90,000 MHS scholarships – The Marjorie & Albert Davidson Scholarship, sponsored by the Rev. Charles “Tommy” Davidson & wife Maureen as a memorial to his parents. Scholarships are awarded to two students who must maintain a B average or better throughout school to remain recipients. (Ongoing annual scholarship - began in 2001)

Annual Holiday Toy Drive – collection, purchase and shipment of toys for Linden children in under-served communities, distributed at an annual party in Linden.
(Started in December 2003)

LINDEN REVITALIZATION PROGRAM (LRP) – a LONG RANGE economic growth plan under development by the Linden Fund organization. To ensure its success, the Fund will team with local & diaspora grassroots, multinational and bilateral development institutions to create new businesses. (2004-2010)

Multi-phase Furniture & Manufacturing Project: Building on the successful Phase 1of the furniture project, the Fund is investigating the feasibility of acquiring land and building a factory to manufacture furniture and wood products of all types for local and national consumption and export. (In the planning stage)
